Activity: Understanding Equivalent Fractions

Picture
We often introduce algebraic concepts before students even understand the basics of number.

This activity is effective for helping students make sense of equivalent fractions.
It builds on the idea of an "area model" where the shaded part is a fraction of the whole. This basic example builds onto many more fraction and algebra concepts that can be modeled using the same idea of area; the area model helps students connect all these concepts together.
